London's Hidden Jewel

Brixton is often compared to Notting Hill, Islington and Shoreditch but is much lesser known as a point of interest to London’s visitors. And just like those other trendy London hubs, Brixton has found a new fame and interest following recent modernisation, whilst managing to hold on to the original vibe it’s always been known for.

Take it back a few years

Brixton is thought to have got it’s name from Lord Brixi, a Saxon lord who erected a boundary stone to mark the boundary of Surrey, but the area didn’t really develop until the early part of the 19th century with the main settlements in Brixton Hill, Stockwell and Coldharbour Lane; still one of the main roads running through the town. When Vauxhall Bridge opened (1816), access to Central London was vastly improved and the development of Brixton flourished.

Strong roots

With its strong African and Caribbean communities since the immigration settlement following World War II, Brixton is home to the Black Cultural Archives where the history of Brixton is truly celebrated. Located in the aptly named ‘Windrush Square’, it is the only centre of its kind in the UK, hosting a collection of personal mementos, photographs and rare books. They also organise history walks and special exhibitions throughout the year.

Brixton is always alive, be it day or night. It has become one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in London, playing host to all ages. There is literally something for everyone in Brixton: Brockwell Park & Brockwell Lido; a Grade-II listed building recently restored and converted to include a leisure centre along with one of South London’s best outdoor swimming pools. The Brixton Academy (now known as O2 Academy, Brixton, is one of London’s leading music venues graced with the performance of a wide host of artists including Eric Clapton, The Clash, David Bowie, The Killers… to name but a few.

Market Row; There’s something different every Saturday from its Retro & Vintage Market, Bakers’ & Flea Market and its famous farmers’ market every Sunday where you can find some of the best organic meats, fruit & veg , herbs… all locally grown. Brixton Village – located on Pope’s Road Market, the entrance to Brixton Village Arcade is a blue door under the blue bridge. There you can sample cuisines from all over the world alongside shops that sell everything from charcuterie and cheese to traditional Chinese medicine.
